Tucked in the old districts of popular resorts, riads are unexpected havens of peace, blending luxury and relaxation with an authentic Moroccan feel.

Over the past decade or so, many old houses and palaces have been transformed into stylish Moroccan riads, offering five star retreats in African style to a discerning clientele. Hidden behind walls like the original buildings, they blend perfectly with their environment and provide the peace and luxury of Boutique Hotels, just steps away from the bustling streets of the medina.

Rooms are set around an inner courtyard in traditional fashion, with galleries on the upper floors. Walls are thick, windows small, keeping the interior cool in summer and warm in winter.

The best riads come with price tags on a par with five star hotels, but their intimate atmosphere, character and comfort make them an increasingly popular choice.

Luxury Boutique Hotel in Marrakech, Zamzam Riad

On the northern edge of the medina, the Zamzam Riad is well hidden and full of surprises. Dip pool and cool fountain greet the guests in the courtyard, alongside fresh oranges, lotus candles and a magnificent palm tree.

The Zamzam aims to provide a holistic experience with hammam and massage, organic produce from its own garden and seven individually designed rooms, from the Hagar lavender room with French and African antiques to the popular Berber suite or the Rose or Palm with marble bathrooms. Smooth curving shapes and beautiful Moroccan lamps enhance relaxation and there is a sun terrace overlooking the medina and snow-capped Atlas.

Adopting a policy of responsible tourism, the Zamzam riad uses local materials and artisans whenever possible and solar energy.

Moroccan Riad Essaouira, Villa Maroc

In the pretty Atlantic resort of Essaouira, Villa Maroc has light spacious rooms, cosy sitting areas with Moroccan cushions and rugs and live fires in season. Shaded balconies and rooftop terrace look out to the ocean and both beach and medina are on the doorstep. The Oriental Spa offers hammam and massage which can be adapted for children.

Villa Maroc has earned a high reputation for its family cooking, serving delicious Souiri dishes based on fish and argan oil, Moroccan breakfast and dinner with a different menu every day. The dining area is divided into intimate rooms and the accent is on traditional but healthy food.

Moroccan Riad, Ouarzazate, Rose Noire

Gateway to the desert, Ouarzazate draws visitors to its world-class film studios and its ancient Kasbah, the perfect setting for atmospheric riads. The riad Ouarzazate Rose Noire offers the traditional hospitality once enjoyed by passing caravans, plus modern comforts and luxury. Soothing plants and sculptures grace the interior courtyard while the sun terrace looks across the pink walls of the Kasbah and mosque towards the river glistening in the distance.

Rooms and suites are spacious, favourites include the Berber Room and the Blue Room in Touareg style. The dining room has a long table worthy of a palace and serves pancakes, Berber omelette and house bread for breakfast and traditional Moroccan meals, such as tagine, couscous or pigeon pie.
